A Different Kind of Loss

Loss has definitely been a theme for us this semester; one that while not our favorite or what we hoped for, we have accepted its place in our lives.  If you would like to know more about that last sentence, you can read this post or listen to the sermon Chris preached last week.

In the midst of the craziness of this stressful semester, Chris and I decided that we both needed to be more healthy, eating better foods, exercising more, etc. Luckily in January, the seminary decided to convert one of the lounges in our building into a mini gym with a couple of treadmills, ellipticals, and a couple of weight machines. Chris did really well with our plan and went to the gym almost every day. I went less regularly but tried to walk more when I was at work (using the copy machine at the other end of the building when possible, etc).  To add to the motivation, Chris and I made a bet: whomever lost the largest percentage of body weight before his graduation (May 23) would not have to pack a single box and the other person would have to do all the packing.  As I am a pretty competitive person (and HATE packing!!), this was very motivating!!

There have been many ups and downs this semester and our weight loss journey has had its share too.  However I am happy to report that I have lost 10 pounds since January and Chris has lost 25 pounds! We both seem to have more energy and look thinner than 5 months ago.  I tried to find pictures to illustrate this but evidently I don't have a lot of pictures of the two of us on my phone… The best I could do was a picture taken when we went to the PA Renaissance Faire last September and a picture taken last Sunday after church. The pictures don't seem to do justice to the reality so y'all should just have to come out here and see for yourselves!!

Since the weather has been so nice here recently (high today was finally in the 80s!!), we have taken to exercising outside. Luckily we live very close to a canal and can walk/run on the towpath. We are both so confident in our new found fitness that we signed up to do a 5K next Saturday.  Admittedly the offer of a pint of cider after the race was also motivating!!  That was so motivating in fact that we are driving over two hours to compete in this race with some friends.  I am confident that we will both do our best and beat our personal goals!

All that being said, please pray that we will both stay safe and injury-free while running/walking and that we will continue to make healthy decisions (eating, exercising, etc).

And may the best WOman win!!
