From East and West, North and South
The sacrament of The Lord's Supper has been central in my experience of the church for almost as long as I can remember. From the days in my childhood when I was jealous that I didn't get a snack in church like everyone else, to our Friday celebrations here at PTS, I have always known (to varying degrees) that this mattered.
This past weekend marked another milestone in my journey: for the first time I assisted in presiding at a celebration of the Eucharist. While I only presented the prayer of thanksgiving and helped hand the elements to the Elders, it was still a big moment for me. (In the Presbyterian Church, you must be ordained to present the Words of Institution) The fact that it was also World Communion Sunday made the day just a little more momentous.
I know there will be bigger days in the years to come, but in this moment, I am happy. I have the opportunity to break bread with my congregation, much like the faithful have done for generation upon generation. We gather together, in churches big and small in all corners of this world, and meet at the table of our Lord Jesus Christ. At this table we are united, fed, and reminded again of God's grace.
May your day be filled with hope and peace.
